The soldier did the right thing. If the dignity and safety of his daughter, wife, sister, or any other family member accompanying him cannot be ensured in the presence of those individuals, or if a serving soldier is publicly surrounded and subjected to humiliation by a mob, then such provocation is bound to produce a strong reaction. In fact, he still demonstrated considerable restraint and maturity by firing into the air rather than directly at anyone. Someone less composed might have reacted far more aggressively and fired directly. Every human being has a right to dignity, self-respect, and personal space, and no one should be subjected to public humiliation or harassment. At the very least, even if those people had no regard for the uniform he was wearing, they should have shown some respect for his age and his grey hair. Basic human decency and respect for an individual—regardless of his profession or position—should never be abandoned in a crowd. His response should therefore be understood in the context of the humiliation, provocation, and circumstances he was facing. Nevertheless, the fact that he chose an aerial warning shot rather than directly targeting anyone shows that he exercised restraint under an extremely tense situation. Thank you.
