Bloating after meals? Your digestive enzymes might be worth looking at. If you regularly feel bloated, uncomfortable or like your food is sitting heavily in your stomach after eating, there are a number of possible reasons. One area I look at in clinic is how effectively you’re breaking down and digesting your food. Your body naturally produces different digestive enzymes, and each has a specific role. Here’s a breakdown of some of the main ones: 1. Amylase Helps break down starches into smaller carbohydrates. Digestion actually begins in your mouth, where salivary amylase starts working as you chew. 2. Lactase Breaks down lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. If you don’t produce enough lactase, you may experience bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort or diarrhoea after consuming lactose. 3. Pepsin A protein-digesting enzyme found in your stomach. It works in an acidic environment to begin breaking proteins into smaller peptides. 4. Lipase Helps break down dietary fats so they can be absorbed in the small intestine. Pancreatic lipase plays a particularly important role here. 5. Cellulase Helps break down cellulose, a component of plant cell walls. Interestingly, humans don’t naturally produce cellulase, although it can be found in some digestive enzyme supplements. So when might digestive enzymes be useful? In certain circumstances, such as lactose intolerance or pancreatic enzyme insufficiency, targeted enzyme supplementation can make a meaningful difference. However, not all bloating means you’re lacking digestive enzymes. Digestive symptoms can also be related to constipation, food intolerances, gut motility, reflux, IBS and other gastrointestinal conditions. I also discuss how some people experience heaviness after protein-rich meals, particularly when taking acid-suppressing medication. Stomach acid is important for activating pepsin, but feeling heavy after eating doesn’t automatically mean you have low stomach acid or need enzymes. And if you’ve had your gallbladder removed, it’s important to remember that bile helps with fat digestion, but it isn’t a digestive enzyme. Digestive symptoms after gallbladder removal may require a different approach. One product I discuss in this video is Herbs of Gold Digest-Zymes, a digestive enzyme complex available through our Nourishing Apothecary online store. It’s an option worth discussing with your practitioner rather than assuming everyone with bloating needs digestive enzymes. If you’re regularly experiencing bloating, abdominal discomfort or digestive problems, our Gut Health Naturopath Jess can help you investigate what’s contributing to your symptoms. Jess works with clients at our Liverpool clinic and Australia-wide via Zoom. You can book directly with Jess or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call.
