Our vet asked us... Are they living or are they existing? Those words hit so hard and helped us decide. We were being selfish and she was existing for us and no longer living for her.

I’m struggling with anticipatory grief. My boy was diagnosed with larpar yesterday and I know we are getting close to either a tieback surgery or having a different conversation. Tiebacks are so scary, and he has arthritis, neuropathy, and recent bloodwork is trending toward cushings. But he is SO full of life.

My dog lost control of his back legs, so he dragged his back legs and lost control of his bowels. But he still would drag his feet to go grab his favorite bone or his toys. Even though he played every night, still ate and drank, his physical health was not a quality of life. It took a long time to make this decision. Miss this boofer every day! Here’s hims just before we made the hardest decision getting a bestest boy cheeseburger. 🥰

I worked with a vet once who said that it’s kinder and more loving to let them go a month too early than a day too late. I thought it was a nice concept, but really appreciated it when we said goodbye to our senior, Lucille, last winter. We could be sad a bit earlier knowing that she didn’t suffer any longer.

I've told myself to pick 3 things your dog loves the most. When your dog won't or can't do 2 of them then it's close to time.

Grief is the price we pay for loving something so much.

I had to say goodbye to my baby a week before her third birthday. She was fine and four days later she was gone. Took her to her vet this past Thursday and she was diagnosed with stage 5 IVDD. She got so much worse over the weekend and I had to take her to the emergency vet Sunday morning and they wanted to keep her overnight. That night they called and said I needed to make a decision. On one hand it was the hardest decision I’ve ever made but on the other hand her quality of life has always been my priority. Her birthday is 8/31 I’m gonna celebrate her first birthday in heaven with people who loved her so much. It’s going to be tough but I know she will be there in spirit ❤️❤️

I just had to make this decision Tuesday. It was awful and sudden and I miss him so much.

I remember we made the decision and when we brought our cat in the vet tried to talk us into a whole list of expensive treatments. It was hard enough, then the vet piled on guilt and shame. I get that they may have been trying to “help,” but we couldn’t afford thousands in treatments that may or may not help and it felt like our decision wasn’t respected, nor our pet. He just wanted to pump is for more money

Crazy that this was posted just a few hours after I put my sweet bunny down. It was a tough decision for me but I just didn’t want him to suffer any longer.

Have you ever encountered a hole in the intestinal mesentery in a dog? Our Siberian Husky bitch had to be put down due to an emergency when she was 6 years old. They only found 2 similar cases, and they were in German Shepherds.

This is my Reece. She lived a good 17 years. We got her when she was 4. She was at Paws for 2 of those years. She was having a hard time walking and she had a seizure so bad she went blind. I didn’t realize she was blind until the vet told us. She hated crates and she thought she was in a dark room and kept looking for me. But she kept falling because of her arthritis. It was time to let her go. I miss her every day.

question i had a Pomsky she was only 3 when I was told by our vet it was best to put her down. She was having very bad aggression toward my other dog out of no where. she would try to attack my dog from his hips/butt. I went thru months of medicines, taking them on separate walks, separate areas of house but she would still randomly go after my dog randomly. the day before we put her down she went crazy and turned toward me and my daughter and started snarling, growling and trying to take off toward us and my husband couldnt get her to calm down, we had to go outside and my husband said when we left the house she tried to attack my husband also and he said he saw her eyes shift and she shook her head and then gave him puppy eyes and laid down and pouted. was there anything else we could have done? we thought about the idea of rehoming but his parents told us when she stayed with them for a couple months while my husband was living somewhere he couldn't have her, she was having spouts of horrible distruction and getting aggressive with them and thier cats. we were told by our vet putting her down was the best option but she was also 3 I beat myself up for her going so soon.

I lost my girl in March. My family lost one last August and this May. Those two went on our time, my girl went tragically and it wasn’t how I would have wanted. Please please hear me when I say a day early is better than a day too late

I lost my Vinny three weeks ago today. He died in my arms at home “unexpectedly”. I still worry that I should have done something different but looking back i know it was his time. ❤️‍🩹

One thing a vet told me, that turned out to be so true (and I wished I had listened) is that a month too early is way better than a day too late. Trust me. As heartbreaking as it is, please give yourself and your pet grace. ❤️

Thank you. Our cat Zena has early stage renal failure and is getting so skinny. I know this is a decision we will need to make sometime soon. Not looking forward to this but definitely don’t want to have our baby suffer.

I lost my baby girl yesterday and it had to be the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. I know I did the right thing for her but the amount of hurt and sadness I feel is overwhelming. I’m missing her tremendously 💔😭

I had to say good bye for the first time ever to my girl Echo. I knew it was time after trying to manage her failing joints as a geriatric dog. She was my sidekick in every thing, fully clicker trained, did man many local rescue fundraisers with me. I knew when she fell on the way out the front door and soiled herself. the look on her face told me it was time. I could see the shame she felt making a mess in the house. She had been having accidents at night and hiding in the morning, she NEVER had accidents and in that moment I knew her "quality" of life for her was no longer there. we had to wait 3 days for an appointment and in those 3 days she would lost her hind end and have an accident again. It killed me, the second the vet said she was gone, I felt the worst guilt I have ever felt in my life. That was something that no one even prepared me for. Now that I have had time to process I KNOW I made the right decision. Then 5 months later, I had to make the exact same decision for our senior cat. I felt like I was just lining up to murder my animals and it started the grief all over again.
