Japan and South Korea have basically speed run demographic and social suicide and the children who will grow up in an economy and population that fall off a cliff and then suddenly rebound within a single generation is going to force a reckoning. Japan is heading into the worst of it right now, with the working age population in free fall but retirees requiring huge amounts of medical and elder care, but they'll begin to pass in a sudden wave just like they've retired and there will be a second massive restructuring as the average age and net tax contributions invert. I almost suspect we might see another huge baby boom.

A cultural problem unfortunately. Salarymen increasingly came to view themselves as part of a collective and tolerated conditions they might’ve otherwise rejected. At the end of the day, we are individuals. You do not owe a company unconditional loyalty, nor does a company owe you the same. The relationship exists insofar as both sides benefit from the exchange. Once that mutual benefit disappears, neither side should be expected to sacrifice itself for the other. The issue with Japans people is that they don’t look at it from that perspective and believe they should sacrifice themselves for an entity that won’t care once you are gone.
