@ryanselvy: Every time a TV cartoon show gets a theatrical release they suddenly add all these shadows and 360° Matrix style shots to the style. I’ve seen it happen with Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, Bobs Burgers, The Simpsons, The Jetsons, SpongeBob… the list goes on. So when the Bluey movie had a 3D aesthetic it wasn’t entirely surprising, but it did make me take note. Bluey is fantastic television. I watch it with my nephews and it’s extremely rewarding for all ages, which often isn’t the case for stuff like that. But the detail and thought that not only goes into the visuals, but the scripting and show positioning is why it was the most streamed thing in the world for 2 years. And it looks like it’s on its way to maybe claim that for a third year. So they’ve earned their right to make decisions and let us trust the vision. I’m not here to declare it’s gonna be bad. The establishing shot they have of the exterior of the house in 2.5D has me hopeful, but the teaser feels like more full on 3D. The shading and color seems like it’s spot on, I just hope they don’t lose their trademark animation style during this process. The 2D character pupetteering they pull off is extremely impressive especially in scenes like the ice cream waltz, so would’ve been nice to see that (with my nephews 😰) in a theatrical release. But we’ll have to wait and see!

I love when the theatrical release gets deeper shading cause it gives the movie a more cinematic, expensive feel when there’s depth. It also makes for a consistent feel when they interact with live action characters (like the SpongeBob movie). Space jam did a similar thing for the Looney Tunes

I don’t mind the theatrical style change. I think it makes the release feel special. In most shows you only see characters in one art style only the whole fun. A slight change for a movie feels fun and elevated.

Typically creators had an original visual style that had to be compromised on in order for things to work in syndication. Animated lighting is an extra labor intensive step that can be trimmed away to make things work for TV. movie budgets tend to be higher, and effectively every shot is a one off, so you have a lot more artistic freedom to do things that otherwise wouldn't work in the production of a TV show.

Its for the soul purpose of making it standout from the TV show. Trust me the mass populous (In the US) who doesnt care for animation style, is more likely to see this movie 3d animated. I feel like if they left it 2d some parents would be like ehh the kids can watch this at home. When you've met people irl who are like "Idk i just cant take a 2d cartoon movie seriously" but will watch the minions cuz "idk this one's just different"

I like when movies do it, but I hate when the show eventually changes to it. it happened to the Simpsons around like season 15, and that’s when the show got really bad too

It doesn't matter if you prefer the tv show version. 9 times out of 10 the character designs and overall look of a cartoon show is meant to save time and money. The film versions look that way because they're putting more time and money into a process that's usually done cheaper and faster.

as long as they don't completely abandon what makes the show great then a higher-end art style can make the movie feel more special, the SpongeBob movie is a great example of a different animation style while still being true to the show
