@aaseespace: Pure sodium reacts violently when it comes into contact with water because it is an extremely reactive metal. As soon as the sodium touches the water, it reacts rapidly to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas while releasing a large amount of heat. The heat can melt the sodium into a small ball, causing it to race across the water's surface as hydrogen bubbles form around it. If enough heat builds up, the hydrogen gas can ignite, producing a bright yellow flame and sometimes a small explosion. This is why sodium is stored away from water and moisture.
