The crisis began after East German border guards tried to control the movement of American officials entering East Berlin. The United States argued that only Soviet authorities had the right to check Allied personnel. Soon, American tanks moved toward the checkpoint. Soviet tanks answered. For hours, the two superpowers faced each other at close range, with loaded tanks pointing across the border. One wrong order or nervous decision could have turned the confrontation into a much larger conflict. Behind the scenes, Washington and Moscow worked to stop the crisis from getting out of control. Eventually, the Soviet tanks pulled back. The American tanks followed. No shots were fired. But for a few tense hours in Berlin, U.S. and Soviet forces stood dangerously close to direct war.
