Let’s talk about Japan’s consumption tax drop to 1% for 2 years beginning April 2027 and the impact it will have on tourist. Japan's government has decided to lower the consumption tax on food from 8% to 1% for 2 years from April 2027 for takeout food. However, alcohol, dine-in meals, clothing, hotels, and trains will remain at the 10% tax. Overall this is good news for tourists planning to go to Japan from April 2027–April2029 since this will make a decent impact on your food budget. One factor to think about is Let’s also not forget that Japan’s Tourism Tax System change is going into effect November 1, 2026. ↳ It will change from an instant refund method to a delayed refund method. Right now until November 1st, 2026 when you go to purchase an item you present your passport and the taxes are deducted from your total. When the delayed refund method is in action tourists will pay the full tax upfront and apply for a refund at the airport during departure. There are some pros and cons to the change but this video is not really focusing on that.
