The teen’s dad said his son’s heroics almost moved him to tears. A teenage lifeguard’s dramatic rescue of a boy has gone viral and led to Donald Trump promising to award him a “high civilian honour”. Footage circulating on social media shows 16-year-old Ryder Willams battling to keep the 10-year-old child safe as the pair are smashed by wave after wave at Seabright State beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday. Several bystanders attempt to help the young hero, first forming a human chain to pull the pair out of the surf, but the waves force them to retreat. After a second lifeguard enters the water, the pair manage to pull the child to the safety of the shore. Ryder’s dad, Shane, said his son refused to let the child go because he knew the boy would die if he did. “He told me: ‘I just was not going to let that happen’,” the proud dad has been quoted as saying. He added: “I almost started crying because how determined he was to save that boy’s life makes me so proud.” Donald Trump’s son, Eric, shared a video of the rescue on X, describing the teen as “truly the best of America” and calling for him to be awarded for his bravery. The US President later announced he was going to bring “this young heroic young man and his family to the White House, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honour.” “Very brave, he deserves it,” Mr Trump wrote on X. Ryder’s mother has thanked supporters for praising her son but said he was just doing what he loves. The comment was echoed by Ryder’s dad, a retired firefighter, who said his son was a very humble hero. “He told me he doesn’t know why everyone was blowing this out of proportion,” Mr Willams added. “His comments to me are like 
 ‘Any other lifeguard on duty would do the same thing I did’.” Witness Scott Vander Dussen told NBC Bay Area that the waves changed “in a heartbeat” and caught a lot of people off-guard. After being rescued, the child was evaluated by paramedics before being reunited with his parents.
