@wellwithsaskia: Because dieting gives you something food freedom takes away: certainty. When you’re dieting, there are rules. Eat this. Don’t eat that. This is healthy. That’s unhealthy. Stay on track. Start again Monday. And while those rules can be restrictive, they can also temporarily make you feel safe because you don’t have to make the decisions yourself. Then you try to let go of food rules and suddenly your brain is asking: Am I eating too much? Is this healthy? Should I be eating this? What if I lose control? That isn’t necessarily a lack of nutrition knowledge. It can be intolerance of uncertainty. And this is something I think we massively overlook when we talk about food freedom, intuitive eating and recovery from restrictive eating. Sometimes you’re not looking for more information. You’re looking for reassurance. And the more you outsource your decisions around food, the harder it can become to trust yourself. Food freedom isn’t knowing you’ll always make the “right” decision. It’s learning that you can make an imperfect decision without panicking, compensating or needing to start again. That’s the psychology behind food freedom that I explore in my latest Substack.
