@bloodytoothguy: I’m not sure I believe in work-life balance. Actually, for any real achievement, I am sure I don’t. Balance implies some kind of equality. Equal time. Equal energy. Equal attention given to every part of your life. That’s never been my reality. I spend a significant amount of my time working. In the beginning, because I had to. Now…because I genuinely love what I do. I love being an oral surgeon. I love building and leading Riverside. I love growing and honing MAX. I love what I get to do with Bloody Tooth Guy. I love creating things, growing things, solving problems and being around people who are equally driven. To be clear…yes, despite my love for my aforementioned professional pursuits, my family and the people I love are the most important thing in the world to me. Maybe the better goal isn’t balance. Maybe it’s harmony. There are seasons when work gets 90% of you. There are moments when your family needs 100%. There are times when something else needs to move to the front. The percentages change. The goal is to build a life where the things that matter to you can coexist, even when they aren’t evenly divided. I work a lot because I love my work. My work isn’t something from which I’m constantly trying to escape so I can get back to my life.
