It’s a common misconception, they actually stopped hundreds of millions from dying from famine. India for example had regular famines every 20-50 years. The British came along, conquered it then after the first famine under their rule happened they put in the law how people worked for money and food, meaning everyone got food. The only famine that took place for the next 200 years of rule was during WW2 when the British started losing their grips over India as the were preoccupied so businesses stopped giving food to their workers. And since the British were for good reason to busy to know that was going on, another famine happened. The law was so successful that the population of India increased by 400 million and the laws were kept in place decades after independence.
