That's not an ingredient — it's an umbrella term hiding up to 46 different substances the FDA allows manufacturers to list under two words. What's actually inside: polyvinyl acetate — the same polymer used in wood glue. Polyethylene — the plastic in shopping bags and bottles. Styrene-butadiene rubber — the synthetic rubber used to make car tires. Polyisobutylene — used in adhesives and lubricants. Paraffin wax — derived from petroleum. The University of Portsmouth confirmed it: modern chewing gum contains the same petroleum-derived polymers used in plastics, tyres, and carrier bags. You are chewing plastic. The FDA doesn't require a single one of these to be listed individually. Gum was originally made from chicle — a natural latex from the sapodilla tree. The industry replaced it with synthetic petroleum polymers because they were cheaper, more consistent, and had an indefinite shelf life. On top of the plastic base, Wrigley's Doublemint adds titanium dioxide — a whitening agent banned from food across 27 EU countries after the EFSA ruled it damages human DNA — BHT, a preservative banned in Japan, aspartame, acesulfame K, corn syrup, and sugar. Mars Wrigley just removed titanium dioxide from Skittles after the MAHA Commission flagged it for "cellular and DNA damage." They left it in the gum. Same company. One product cleaned up. The other still contains paint whitener on a plastic base. Chewing gum takes over five years to break down in the environment — because the plastic in it doesn't biodegrade.
