Hi, im one of your Carholic fans. Curious on your thoughts on the hard evidence Joe brought up regarding Padre Pio, heart tissue samples, peer reviewed miracles ect. In his videos, that hard evidence was more convincing than the philosophical arguments and the psychological warmness your are bringing up.

Many of these "former atheists" go back to religion not necessarily because they believe it's true. It's just because being a believer of faith is more socially advantageous for them. They probably are in need of community or some kind of solace because the time when they became "atheist" was a miserable time caused by trauma.

agree with you and with a lot of people here in the comments however every case is of course different. My case for example I had all those tools as an atheist and socially I don’t get anything but I came back to Catholicism. Why? God showed me the way.

this doesn't give enough credit to Joe's journey. He studies high level philosophy at a top university in their PhD program and publishes on these topics. He also regularly has conversations with people who dedicate their lives to these topics.

I must be the odd one out or maybe because I've been an atheist since childhood, and am old now, but I have not had an existential crisis, felt the need for some "purpose" for life to be worthwhile. I can, however, see where a church or church-like community could fill lots of social needs. Unfortunately getting that comes with so much other baggage that has not been worth it. Perhaps if it were a childhood church the familiarity would feel different.

The acceleration of conversion is a great way to put it. He became convinced theism was plausible and then went back to his Catholic roots without employing a fraction of the skepticism he had about theism. At the end of his video, he said he was worried about his eternal soul. So I think there was still some fear-based reasoning that was a result of his upbringing.

Not to oversimplify, but I have always felt that people who are religious believe, ultimately, because they want to. This is especially true of people who join or return to their faith in adulthood. (Obvs this may not hold true for young people that were indoctrinated.)

I have a feeling the vast majority of the atheists in these comments don't know who Joe Schmidt is; he is a PhD philosopher and was one of the leading agnostics against the existence of God, his biggest contribution to philosophy was his existential inertia thesis which was one of the biggest objections to proofs for the existence of God, he isn't just some "philosophy bro" he is an expert in the field and dumbing down his conversion so social factors (as I've seen many comments do) is just ignorant at best.
