If your uvula doesn’t move when you say “AH”… pay attention. Go find a mirror, open wide and say: “AH… AH… AH.” Watch that little dangly thing in the back of your throat, that’s your uvula, which is part of your soft palate. As you say “AH,” you should see your soft palate lift. Your tongue shouldn’t be doing the work. Notice in the video that my tongue stays relatively still while the movement happens in the back of my throat. Why do I care about this as a Myofunctional Therapist? Because we don't just work on the front of the tongue. We also work on awareness, coordination and control of the muscles in the back of the mouth and throat, and how they work together for functions like swallowing and speech. Your soft palate is also one of the structures I look at during a myofunctional evaluation, along with how much of it is visible. Now check yours. 🪞 Say “AH” three times. Does your soft palate move?
