Can an elephant trunk snake survive out of water?Yes but only for a limited amount of time. It’s actually a lot longer than you would think. There is so many factors that determine this time is it damp, how hot, temperature, ect. Elephant trunk snakes (Acrochordus javanicus) are almost completely aquatic. Their loose, wrinkled skin and dense bodies are adaptations for life underwater, where buoyancy supports their weight and helps them move with ease. A lot easier than they would on land. Yes they can move pretty decent on land. The problem lies in their slow low energy metabolism. They have a limited amount of energy to waste and if that’s gone they are sitting ducks. There is a common myth that they would be “crushed by their own weight” if removed from the water. That’s not true. Their bodies are supported by their skeleton, muscles, and internal organs just like any other snake. They won’t collapse under their own weight. However, being out of water is still stressful for them. On land, they have difficulty moving because they aren’t built for terrestrial locomotion. They lack belly scutes and tight form fitting skin. This leads to them becoming dehydrated or overheating quicker than land-dwelling snakes. So while an elephant trunk snake can safely be out of water for a brief period, it should not be kept out unnecessarily. These remarkable snakes are specialized for a life spent almost entirely underwater. This is why I only pull Nessie for general wellness checks and maintenance. This species is a mainly display animal and hands off as much as possible. So please do research before impulse buying one just cause they are cute and not everything you hear or see on the internet is true. This species is very understudied and a lot more needs to be done. I learn new info and facts about Nessie day to day with interactions with him. #Nessie #elephanttrunksnake #elephant #acrochordusjavanicus #cute
