STOP ASSUMING YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR PROSPECTS ARE THINKING. I’ve made this mistake plenty of times in marketing and sales. You assume you know why a prospect isn’t moving forward. You assume you know what matters most to them. You assume you know what problem they’re really trying to solve. And sometimes, you’re right. Sometimes, you’re WAY off. The problem is that once we make an assumption, we start building the conversation around it. We ask different questions. We recommend different solutions. We might even start solving a problem the prospect doesn’t actually have. A better approach is pretty simple. Go into the conversation with an open mind and get curious about their actual situation. Ask questions. Listen. Then ask a few more questions. One practical takeaway: Before recommending anything, make sure you can clearly explain the prospect’s problem, priorities, and desired outcome in THEIR words, not yours. When you know what’s really going on, you’ll have a much better idea of what to do next. Where do you see assumptions causing the most problems in your marketing or sales process?
