I’m old enough to remember before you put your code in, you had tickets. But if you got free/reduced lunch your tickets were a whole other color so EVERYONE saw it and knew. It makes me so mad to this day. These are CHILDREN!!

Fortunately I never had it that bad as I was poor enough to qualify for the free lunches but I've also wished I didn't because this kind of system isn't just in school lunches and weather or not you can get free ones its also in other financial aid type things like SSI they keep randomly saying we make 3 times the amout we actually make like we wouldn't bother with it if we did but we don't. It's all so stupid and exploitative that it's sickening. 🤦♀️😑😮💨

Thankfully my kids go to schools with free lunch and breakfast for all students regardless of financial status but this is again an issue because why is this not available in all schools 🥺🥺

my mom had to decline promotion because the pay would put us 100 bucks into that gap and we couldn't afford to pay for our lunches.. I remember children and myself getting lunches taken away from us because of failure to pay ..... I was terrified to check out with school lunches because what if I didnt have a balance or they changed the income cap

Humiliation ritual. poor-tax is a real thing in the U.S. and itll exists in different forms. Higher interest rates, extra fees, lower quality basic goods and also humiliation. You get punished if you’re poor

When I was in third grade, there was a kid that owed 30 cents... 30 cents. They took his tray and threw the food in the trash right in front of him. When the class saw him with no tray, we all took portions of our food so he could still have a full meal and not one teacher or admin thought it was crazy. That radicalized me
