Lissy :
I’m an EC, I’ve tried both and worked in a variety of markets. What I’ve settled on is a hybrid. First I have created a simplified bidding process that allows me to bid based off of tasks and assemblies rather than hours and materials directly. The simplified bidding process has allowed me to speed up bidding considerably. I also spend more time when on the phone asking questions so that in most cases, I can do a rough estimate through just a phone conversation. I do my estimate where I list clearly all of the assumptions I’ve made so that we do a site visit only after somebody is ready to move forward based on my assumptions. This means I’m not making site visits for people that haven’t been prequalified in the vast majority of cases those jobs will move forward. The other thing I’ve done is I’ve learned for very predictable jobs things like backup generator installs I will in my initial conversation give people the typical price range and ask them if that was a price they were expecting to hear that question alone will pre-qualify them often as a customer or not. That also keeps me from even doing rough estimates for people that weren’t ever going to be my customer. If somebody insists on me coming out to look at their project when I don’t feel that the chances are necessarily super high in my favor, then I charge for the estimate, but that’s the only time. By speeding up my bidding process and not doing as many site visits I can afford to give estimates for free.

I’m just starting out don’t have the client base to charge, for estimates but I do cook the time I spend on said estimates into jobs I do land by adding 5-8 percent of job usually covers my footwork to Land job. Or a general 50$ hour to time spent, traveling or researching job scope and phase plan so on.

I like how you sae that but when you are no longer in the field, im not sure employees scale this like you just described. Id like to think they would but in reality I doubt it. That being said, I charged when I did roofing/siding since they are large cost items. It made the small jobs and the overly priced sensitive customers go away quickly. Now I do small jobs. Junk hauling, window cleaning, gutter cleaning ect.... Our average job is $239. No way I could charge for estimates on small jobs. We just quote everything off Google images, customer photos, or sq footage of the home.

On site consultation fee that is credited towards your deposit on your project. “ I have someone else giving quotes for free! “ sounds awesome call them back.
