@dark_art_dark_travel: Share this if you hate IKEA! 👊🏼👊🏼 The room that took more than 50 years to finish… Hidden inside Nostell Priory is one of its most spectacular interiors, the Tapestry Room, originally designed by Robert Adam in the 1760s as the house’s grandest drawing room. Adam created the elaborate neoclassical ceiling, with intricate plasterwork and painted panels by Antonio Zucchi, but despite all the ambition and expense, the room was still unfinished when Sir Rowland Winn died in 1785. In fact, by 1818 it was simply recorded as the “Unfinished Drawing Room”, its walls still waiting for their final decoration. It was Charles Winn who finally transformed the space, purchasing a magnificent set of 18th-century Brussels tapestries depicting the four continents, which were hung between 1822 and 1824 and gave the room the name it carries today. But there is an even darker twist to these beautiful tapestries: one of the original set, representing Europe, was destroyed by fire in 1920 and later replaced with a period example. Look closely at the room and you are seeing the result of generations of ambition, unfinished plans, craftsmanship and tragedy, all preserved beneath one extraordinary ceiling. And this is just one room inside Nostell Priory… a house packed with stories that are far stranger than its elegant façade suggests. #darkacademia #gothic #maximalism #darkaesthetic #UKTravel

JoanofArc1984 :

Absolutely. I have my eye on certain “fixer uppers” because I’m good at building and trying new projects. I WILL restore it to its former glory with a few modern comfortable touches of course 👍
