I do know this is true but I have horrible handwriting and go down a shame spiral when I see my own handwriting.

I somehow knew this as a kid. I rewrote all my notes whenever there was a test & was a really good student. Even now, when I want to memorize something, I write it out over and over. So good to learn more about it!

I watched the first two seconds of this video before leaving this comment.
I have ADHD really bad, but one thing I discovered in college (and it's what got me through college) is that if I handwrite everything, if I handwrite my notes instead of typing them, and handwrite all the things I think about in the margins of the chapter, it makes a massive difference.
It's like that scene in Harry Potter where Dolores Umbridge makes Harry write "I will not tell lies" over and over again, and it carves itself into his arm, except it carves it into my brain. Writing something by hand seems to carve it into my brain, and that is the only way I can remember a thing.

I take notes in classes, even though my handwriting is frequently illegible in places, the act of writing the notes help me remember what I learned.

if I take notes, (type something while listening) I just can't, I gotta pay atention so I can process the information.
"it reduces stress"?! it streseses me even more wanting to type something faster but knowing if I do, I won't be able to read it!

Any tips for using writing by hand in the book writing process? One of my concerns with leaning on handwriting when book writing is that there's no backup of the work like there would be on a document stored in the cloud

This is why I use a paper planner and calendar, not digital. Paper means more to me for some reason.

As an occupational therapist, you have articulated what I’ve been saying for my entire 35 year career. Everyone needs to hear this 😁

As someone that can type quite well, I will say that my personal experience is the better I got at typing the less thinking gets involved. I’ve also worked with people who used to do transcription and it was interesting about how they could recall almost nothing of what they transcribed because typing can really truly be an activity that doesn’t engage your frontal lobe.

In therapeutic writing, it’s also proof to yourself that you love yourself enough to do the physical work of it.

I've ALWAYS preferred taking notes with a paper notebook over typing. I remember better and I get the chance to doodle.

I’ve noticed when I write more my communication skills gets better. And when I don’t write as much said skills go down. Interesting.

I’m curious then about those who cannot write/read. Does copying from a model without the ability to understand it have an effect beyond learning to read/write?

I prefer to write by hand and using an iPad. The app MyScript is fantastic. It converts my writing to text and I move that to Google Docs
