@britannic_edits: Operation Chariot was one of the most daring British raids of all time. On the 28th of March 1942, British forces launched a combined naval and commando assault against the German-occupied port of Saint-Nazaire. The obsolete destroyer HMS Campbeltown was disguised as a German vessel and deliberately driven into the Normandie dry dock, carrying a large quantity of explosives, meanwhile, commandos attacked key installations and disabled the port’s infrastructure. The raid resulted in heavy British casualties but the dry docks destruction prevented it from being used by large German warships for the remainder of the war. The raid, considered impossible by many, was an unquestionable success and a major morale boost for the British war effort.
