Genius. I used to tell the aide’s that would shower my grandma, that if she refused, tell her they’ll be “fired” if she doesn’t take a shower. She loved rescuing them from their mean boss 😂

When my grandmother developed dementia, she eventually ended up in a nursing home where she got increasingly more combative with all of the staff, there cursing and yelling and fighting them. Eventually, she had to go to the hospital to have all of her psychiatric medication‘s taken off and for them to figure out what to give her. But what they found when she went to the hospital was that she wasn’t combative or aggressive there at all. Turns out all of the people in the local nursing home were the children and grandchildren of people she knew, and we think it was very difficult for her to have them caring for her because she was the one who was supposed to care for all those others. When she got discharged, she went to a nursing home two towns away, and they didn’t have any problems with her. That is to say having your children tell you what to do can be very humbling and difficult… Sometimes strangers are better.

I feel for you. My MIL had Huntington’s Disease which is like having Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and ALS all at once. She was physically and emotionally abusive and just not safe at home. Even with repeated police calls, Adult Protective Services, and 3 community restraining orders, we could not get her declared incapacitated nor did we want guardianship. We were advised to remove ourselves completely from her life to let her reach rock bottom. Eventually, we took her to the ER to “prove” to use she was well. While there, an ER doctor saw all of our evidence and sent her to a bigger city hospital. We refused to come and get her. Therefore, the county in which she resided had to take over as her guardian and poof - she was declared incapacitated. She was then placed in a lovely facility for HD. It’s an awful system.

So you can bring the application to her, discuss it in detail and fill it out. Stress it’s not imminent, you just need to have a place reserved ‘in case’. Get her to sign it. This may take a while. Then just move her when she agrees. When she balks at that, show her the application—mama, you signed it. She’ll recognize her hand writing. This is all legal. And you can do this while ‘Bill’ discusses it.

Yes this is a fantastic idea and if it's (presumably) her idea... I didn't have to go that far with my mom but once she saw the actual place and knew she'd have people waiting on her hand and foot, it was a done deal.

I had to get guardianship of my dad. The cost was taken from his accounts. It was about $4000 and it took about 4 weeks. I don’t recommend it though, there’s so much work involved
