@erinrackham: I’m grateful and lucky to be in the “post”-trauma from my most severe days with Long COVID, I know. But I still think it’s worth talking about the process of reinhabiting my body and learning to feel safe again after so many years of lost capacity & unrelenting pain. ❤️‍🩹 #longCOVID #MECFS #ptsd #partswork #IFS

My trauma: every time I get Covid (or any virus) I get worse overall. My baseline goes down. And now Covid is on the rise again, school is back in session and I have two high schooler and one kid in college. I’m going to be quarantining for the next two months. Also, my state has the highest vaccine exemption rate of any state.

Thank you for talking about this and sharing your experience. I’m severe and when people focus on getting better and think things will just be good and back to normal if I just recover or gain a certain amount of capacity back, I’m like…no then I would have to actually start contending with the extreme social abandonment and trauma that I currently “get to” just survive and try not to think about straight on, and although improving some is hands down the best and most hoped for future, at this sickness level it seems insurmountable to be able to really think about what is happening to me and move through that trauma because it just keeps stacking up

I'm experiencing this, too. It's terrifying to have regained most of my cognitive function because I spent 2020-2025 in a thick mental fog. Energy levels wane from day to day, pain comes and goes, and my mobility is still shot but I feel mentally present and it's overwhelming. Take it a day at a time, I guess.

I've had Fibromyalgia and ME for 15 years, some years worse than others some years more bed bound than others. I have managed to get to the point where I can for the most part consistently manage daily care tasks of body and home.I do not have help, I have no idea if I will improve further. I am increasingly antisocial. I have not had the supports I need. I will never jump back in, cause the onset was pediatric, I never got to be "in" to begin with. anger is like the only reason I'm still here. I had a pain specialist tells me to go to MAID when I asked for physiotherapy, the anger from that moment, it saved me. And i found a home in what to me became sacred words. "fuck you I'm not done yet". “Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” ― William Ernest Henley, Invictus I survived because I was angry, I survive because I'm still angry. I'm angry because I deserve to live, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul. and I thank myself for being angry enough to live. I think the worst part is how I feel towards other people. I have been in so much pain alone for so long, I haven’t had a medical professional I could trust since I was a child. it's changed who I am and who I could be and the way I see people. I don't know how to process what never stops happening. I focus on radical acceptance, I'm in pain and I'm angry and that that anger saves me. As long as I'm angry, I won't give up. "Do Not go quietly". I hope I get to the next part but if I have to be angry forever then I will be grateful I loved myself so much that I wouldn't let the world convince me to leave it.

I am not mentally ready to relive that level of fear and trauma. I don’t want to think about it at all (at least yet). I’m in 1.5 years with long-covid and I know if I go through that level of fear and trauma again like in the beginning, it will literally break me. My mind felt like it was breaking along with my body. Maybe someday I’ll process, but not someday soon.

I’ve been thinking this for a while!! I just graduated applied psychology and have Long Covid/ possibly ME/CFS too, but I feel like we’re so busy with trying to physically recover and get better that we kind of overlook the mental aspects of it

I still have nightmares about my chronic illnesses to this day, although less frequently. but no one talks about it and it’s incredibly difficult to find empathetic therapists who understand medical PTSD and ongoing medical trauma. I genuinely don’t think society gives us many options besides just moving on…

It’s hard not to grieve daily what you’ve gone through. I feel like a broken record talking to my family about it but it’s so crazy when it’s your whole experience. When you can’t be active, it’s so hard to deal with these things because you’re stuck processing it with your mind until your body heals

I had moderate, manageable ME until I got Covid last year and then I woke up a couple months later and I couldn’t exist in my world as it was anymore. Terrifying is right. It’s sudden, it’s unknown, it’s so traumatic. Thank you for talking about it.

Thank you for highlighting this aspect! I have often said even getting better it would be difficult reincorporating into normal life after 11 years because we see the world so differently now.

Here’s hoping at some point public health and the rest of us get the word out to those who have yet to get long Covid to how to avoid it and that they should be masking indoors to protect themselves and to protect others or this is just going to continue on and on and on
