"But what about burping?" 🙋🏻‍♀️ It was the number one question on my last video, so let's talk about it. Here's something that surprises a lot of mums: most breastfed babies don't actually need to be burped. I know. Take a second with that one, because it's probably the opposite of what you've been told. Here's why. When your baby feeds really well at the breast, with a really good latch (and the latch is key), they're not taking in much air. Think of it like a seal, or an airlock, between your baby's mouth and the breast. It's sealed, so no air is getting in. Bottle feeding tends to bring in more air, which is where a lot of the burping advice actually comes from. But a well-latched breastfed baby usually swallows very little. So if your baby is feeding lying down, drifting off, completely content... please, leave them be. You don't need to sit them up, jostle them, or wake them to force a burp that probably isn't even there. And if they do need to bring up a little wind, most babies will either do it themselves, or you'll notice them getting a bit wriggly or squirmy, and then you can help them. But if your baby always seems uncomfortable or windy, that's worth looking into with an IBCLC like myself, because there's usually a reason, and it's often completely fixable. Please though, do not wake a peacefully sleeping, well-fed baby just to burp them. Nobody needs that at 3am. Least of all you.
