@willigansisland: @makupid I hope this helps! If you're tired of the "Starting in a tavern trope," here are a few ways to make thse start of a campaign more interesting! #dnd #dungeonsanddragons #dndtok #dungeonmaster #ttrpg
I made my players begin at a public execution. THEIR public execution.

I like starting at a town fair, especially with new players because you can get them to go to the archery stall or whatever depending on character, to practice combat with no bad consequences, also tend to let them win a couple of health potions or something as well to prop them up if they're low level

One of my favorite starts that I did started them in combat against a kraken with altered stats to make it harder, they were on a boat playing different characters than the ones I made, after 3 turns the kraken destroyed the boat and it ended in a TPK, then we pan out and they’re sitting around a fire with a different person telling that exact legend, so I basically had them play out the end of the legend, after that they went and basically investigated the legend finding that it was never a kraken, it was a god-like being(my setting has no gods)

Had a campaign start with them all arrested and the paddy wagon they were on being attacked by giant spiders, that were fleeing a forest fire started by demons bleeding through a hole in reality

the only time I've ever DMed (i was horrible) they started on a smugglers ship with many others, escaping their old home and being brought to a new city. The catch is, the price for the ferry is their memories as the captain was a Spectral creature that loved to eat/hoard memories.

The best one my DM did, was:
"You wake up. You look around. Sand. Endless. all arroud you."
was the best moment. because all I could think was. "the fuck am I going to do here?"

my most recent campaign, I had my players meet while traveling on a large ship, so they were stuck at sea together. said ship was actually a living, breathing, large, ancient monster that they had to figure out how to get rid of while working together as strangers, finding out the monster was too powerful to kill and had to get creative with (they figured out how to put it in a different dimension).

In the Girls Who Don't D&D podcast, they started locked in a cell in the hold of a ship. I thought that was pretty neat. They immediately learned the value of Mage Hand...

Haha some of us do, my first campaign started with my players kidnapped in the bottom of a boat and the second started with them all being chased through the woods by rapid demon animal hybrids after receiving a prophetic dream the night before.

I started a campaign with the characters (who didn’t know each) all being at a festival type event, introduced them through playing out a game or scenario within the festival. At the main event, the mayor of the town was assassinated mid speech by a gang whose relationship with the leader had soured and they wanted it to be known. Instantly thrust my players into a fun then QUICKLY intense situation.

taverns and guild halls are pretty standard start points because that's where you're most likely to form a party to begin an adventure; taverns offering rumors to chase and guild halls having quest boards. to spice things up, i've also started out in the middle of an active battlefield

I've started them at a ritual gone wrong where they just woke up with no idea what was going on.
I also had level 20 characters die in a session zero and then a set of level 3 characters started in the prison being pardoned by the king's advisor in the session 1.
I've also seen DMs say they started with a funeral and every player had to say how they knew the deceased.
