I definitely think this is something that should be talked about more in the fragrance community. I’m not a professional collector by any means I’m still a rookie but I’ve realized that whatever aroma chemicals they use to recreate the smell of passion fruit come across as cat urine to me. And mind you, I live in Puerto Rico. Passion fruit literally grows in my backyard. I smell it all the time, I eat it, and the natural fruit has never given me that impression. But unfortunately, whatever they use to replicate that note in fragrances smells exactly like urine to my nose. The same thing happened to me with the new cherry version of La Vie Est Belle. Everyone seemed to love it, and I genuinely wanted to love it too, but all I can smell is cat urine.

So cool! I first smelled play-doh when I initially tried Hypnotic Poison, but the more time I spent with it, I began to be able to pick up on the notes that were creating that smell. Now I don’t smell play-doh at all when I wear it.

It also has to do with your previous experiences. Take tomato for example. It’s often presented as green and aquatic. A perfumer might take some of the same ingredients they might use for fig. But because they aren’t going for fig, they wouldn’t list it, but since your nose has smelled those things as fig before, it picks up fig. I experience this a lot with sharp fruits like raspberry and rhubarb, where they smell like something else.
