Seymour’s argument seems to be: don’t target help by race — target it by need. Fair enough. But what happens when the evidence shows that need is disproportionately concentrated within a particular population? Do we address the disparity, or pretend we suddenly can’t see it because acknowledging ethnicity makes the spreadsheet uncomfortable? If Māori experience a particular problem at a significantly higher rate, targeting the factors producing that disparity isn’t giving someone a “special privilege”. It’s responding to the evidence. Equality means everyone gets the same thing; equity asks why some groups consistently need more intervention in the first place. And there’s a delicious irony in demanding everyone else produce mountains of evidence while repeatedly leaning on claims, examples and correspondence whose sources apparently have to remain hidden. “Trust me, I’ve seen the evidence — no, you can’t see it” isn't exactly the gold standard of evidence-based policymaking. You can't simultaneously argue “follow the data” and then object when the data identifies an ethnic disparity. Otherwise it isn't the data you're following. It's the conclusion you wanted before you opened the spreadsheet.

I don't understand why people don't realize that treating everyone the same with health care etc will have no negative effect on Maori. So if we all get the same access to diabetes meds based on need not race it's a win win for all
