As viewers, we don’t have the benefit of internal dialogue that we get as readers. In season 1 they expanded Svetlana’s character/role to add context to Ilya’s emotional state and history. In season 2/3 we will eventually have Galina but I suspect Jacob will use physical cues to indicate Ilya’s mental and emotional state.
