@kendraworth: Sibling arguments are so common, but many parents aren’t dealing with them in a productive way & are just shutting them down in the moment, which ends up leading to even more arguments and frustrations later on. First, I make sure everyone is calm, because there’s no point in discussing anything when they’re overly emotional. If I’m driving, I find a place to pull over because I am not going to be able to help them if I am distracted and stressed. Plus, this teaches my kids that we will not keep going to our destination if they are fighting in the car. After everyone is calm, I hear both of my kids out so we know what really happened & we begin our discussion and WHY and HOW one (or both of them) got upset. My goal is for my kids to get along and have true empathy and respect for each other, and that only comes from reflection and discussion. Lots of people roll their eyes at how much I talk to my kids about simple disagreements, but the proof is in the pudding. My children are intelligent, empathetic, caring, and get along WAY better than most siblings.
