This is exactly what happened to my marriage. Before we got married, we fought so hard for acceptance from my family because of the differences in our religion and tribe. My husband put in so much effort, money and even bent over backwards to make that marriage happen, and I did my own part too, standing against the pressure from my family. He stood his ground and fought for us to get married, even after we had our son and had already planned to stop at one child. Looking back, I didn’t realize how much of a fight it had been for him to get us to that point, and neither of us realized that getting married was only the beginning. He and his family were willing to bend over backwards to get my family’s acceptance, and my family eventually accepted the marriage. But the moment we got hitched, it was almost like the butterflies disappeared and the life we had anticipated started dying slowly.
