@elisabethsmiles: Have you been paying for water unnecessarily in France? The tap water is clean and safe to drink, and if you’re visiting Paris, you’ll find many public water fountains, including 17 free sparkling water fountains! 💧🚰 💧 Free water at restaurants is not a given right across Europe though! While many countries, such as Italy and Belgium, only offer paid bottled water, in France (+ the UK & Spain), they are legally required to provide free tap water…as long as you know the right words to say! #francetravel #visitparis #frenchvocab #frenchexpressions #travelfrench

I have been to France 8 times and I just ask for tap water in English and that’s what they bring me. This is all over France, not just Paris.

It's the same way in Spain. Usually people don't want tap water when eating at a restaurant, so you'd have to specify you want tap water.
And no ice, I'd charge you for the ice actually xD

I asked for ice tap water and they brought it to me! However I waited forever for the bill and was told NOT to do the American bill wave. It was the worst. I finally stood up and went in- turns out - I was supossed to pay at the counter 🫠

I feel SO STUPID when I speak another language to a native speaker even when I know what to say. I feel like my accent will be horrible to them. 😩

in Paris I often get chilled water when I ask for a carafe d'eau, especially when it's hot!

Maybe it's because it's restaurants that scam only tourists, but I have never, and I mean NEVER seen any restaurant in France give anyone bottled water, unless they asked for it (which doesn't happen anyway).
Everywhere I've always been always gives free tap water, generally without even having to ask for it

Just got back from France and they always brought free water to the table with little cups as soon as we sat down , we never even had to ask . And they were always in glass bottles with a sealed aluminum type lid. Just my experience.

This isn’t remotely close to true from Caen down to Carcassonne they look at you funny if you ask for still water and often tomes just bring a jug of water anyway unless you specifically say bottle. There is no secret code

I’ve never once had to go to this much trouble to get water. It’s usually just put on the table.

i feel like we have to precise, in france they only do this when they clock you are a tourist(and they’re a shady restaurant), when you look like a local, just speaking native french is enough, they always ask if you dont precise, but even all the times they didnt ask they always brought me a carafe, but its rare that they dont ask because they also need to ask if we want sparkling or still water

When we went like a year or two ago, they would ask do you want water and my husband would respond tapwater is fine and they would bring us a craft. Maybe it’s because we had the kids with us or it was before the Olympics or something but every place we went was extremely accommodating most places also had QR codes on the menu so you could read it in English. I thought everyone there was great.

In NYC they say still or sparkling. And if you say still they bring a bottle that you buy. You must say tap and you'll get free tap water
