The Covert Narcissist… When the Victim Is Just a Mask
A covert narcissist can be one of the hardest types of people to identify because they do not always appear arrogant or aggressive. Instead, they may seem quiet, shy, innocent, vulnerable, or constantly portray themselves as the victim.
They may make you believe that you are dealing with someone who needs to be rescued, causing you to step into the rescuer role while they carefully build and protect their image in front of others.
When you begin to notice their contradictions or confront them about their behaviour, they may respond with a counterattack: damaging your reputation, accusing you of lying, being mentally unstable, irresponsible, or even projecting their own negative behaviours and characteristics onto you.
One of the most dangerous tactics used by some manipulative people is keeping you constantly busy defending yourself. They create one story after another until you become focused on proving your innocence and forget to ask the most important questions: What actually happened? And what did this person do?
That is why you should never judge someone simply because they are quiet, shy, vulnerable, or constantly present themselves as a victim. Look at patterns of behaviour, accountability, honesty, respect for others, and how they behave when they are challenged, rejected, or held responsible for their actions.
Most importantly, not every quiet or shy person is a narcissist, and it is not appropriate to label someone a “psychopath” or diagnose them with a mental disorder based on a few behaviours or a social-media post. Diagnosis is the responsibility of qualified professionals.
However, raising awareness about psychological manipulation, setting healthy boundaries, and protecting yourself from exploitation and character assassination is important.
Do not allow yourself to live permanently in the role of the rescuer, and never allow someone to turn you into the accused simply because you have started setting boundaries.
