Arizona recovered more human remains from the desert this year even as border crossings in the Yuma Sector dropped sharply. According to data compiled by Humane Borders with the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, the remains of 73 people had been recovered across Arizona at the time of the report, compared with 59 at the same point the year before. All of 2025 totaled 103 recoveries. July alone accounted for 19, the highest monthly total in two years, after another 13 were recovered in June. Researchers said many of the discoveries were becoming increasingly concentrated in rugged, remote areas of southwestern Arizona near Yuma. That was happening even as border activity in the Yuma Sector fell significantly. Customs and Border Protection figures showed roughly 1,500 people were taken into custody over the same period, down more than 79% from the year before. Dr. Brad Jones with Humane Borders said the continued recovery of recent remains showed that people were still attempting dangerous desert crossings despite the overall drop in encounters. One important clarification: the figures represent remains recovered, not necessarily people who died that year. Some may have been in the desert for months or longer before being found, while an unknown number may never be recovered at all. Humane Borders, founded in Tucson in 2000, operates permitted water stations throughout southern Arizona. What do you think explains more remains being recovered while border crossings were falling?
