The Only Way Out By: Root Doctor Kye Mercy as release from retaliation. Andra Day is not singing from a place where nothing happened to her. She names betrayal, anger, desperation, and the desire to make another person experience what they caused her to experience. She admits, “I keep thinking that I have to make you fall… The way I fell.” That is what makes this lesson important. Mercy means something entirely different when retaliation is actually available to you. Mercy doesn’t mean forgiveness, reconciliation, passivity, or pretending nothing happened to you. Protection is not revenge. Justice is not revenge. Accountability is not revenge. Boundaries are not revenge. Mercy is the decision that you do not have to exercise every consequence available to you. You can acknowledge a debt without making the collection of that debt the center of your life. Andra gives us the consequence of doing otherwise: “But I’m still in a cage.” Sometimes we remove somebody physically but stay attached to them through retaliation. We think about their downfall. Watch for consequences. Replay what happened. Continue performing work around them. Wait for them to hurt. Hatred can maintain a connection just as much as affection can. They may be gone from your life while still living in your spiritual agenda. The Three Decisions of Mercy JUSTICE: What is actually owed? You are not required to deny the offense. Name what happened and recognize what justice would actually mean. JUDGMENT: What am I capable of doing about it? Discern whether action protects or restores something, or whether you are trying to reproduce your pain in somebody else. MERCY: What am I choosing not to carry forward? You can decide that another person’s debt doesn’t determine your behavior. SOMETIMES mercy releases two people differently: them from your retaliation and you from the cage. The Law of Cause and Effect teaches that actions produce consequences, but you do not have to personally become the cause of every consequence another person experiences. Sometimes you move aside and allow the effects already attached to their actions hit them… “Give it to God.” The Law of Correspondence asks us to look inward. If their actions are determining your thoughts, behavior, spiritual work, and emotional condition well after the offense, the external war has created an internal one. Because of these layers, this song works with a Silence Working. Play the song once, then turn everything off. No television, music, phone, conversation, prayer, or conjure. Sit in complete silence and allow the noise of the conflict to settle. Ask yourself: If I stopped planning their consequences, what would Spirit have me do next? Don’t force an answer. The physical silence represents the spiritual principle in the song: “Revenge is so loud.” Sometimes you can’t hear your next instruction because you are still listening to the drums of the last war. James 2:13 “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” Just remember mercy is not weakness, okay? Sometimes it’s necessary… But there are also times to be the hand of justice. Discernment. That is the work. #hoodoo #music #conjure #release #mercy
