@asherivey: When I say there’s nuance to this discussion, I don’t mean that I support working dogs like this. I don’t. But I think discussing something as unethical can sometimes cause people to interpret that as a blanket statement, so I do want to acknowledge the other facets of this conversation. I believe service work is 100% optional for a dog. There are so many other ways to fulfill a dog and give them a meaningful life. That being said, take a border collie who has spent its entire life working livestock and then has to have a leg amputated. Would I automatically be against that dog continuing to work livestock? Probably not. Granted, I’m not involved in the farm dog world, so I can’t speak to whether that would actually be safe or appropriate for a tripod. I don’t think the conversation should simply be reduced to tripod dogs should never work or even disabled dogs should never work. The type of work, the individual dog, their physical condition, their workload all need to be taken into account. And for service work specifically, I just don’t see the circumstances aligning often enough for me to believe that continuing to work a tripod dog is worth the potential physical cost to the dog or that CHOOSING a tripod for service work (like in this situation, this dog was adopted as a tripod) would ever be a good idea. #servicedog #servicedogintraining #dogcommunity #servicedogcommunity
