I teach felons in jail. One day, on a lark, I gave one of the kids a sticker for doing so well. Can I tell you- everyone busted their butts to get stickers from there on out.

I work for a Public Works department... one day, finally, I received a perfect Material Request Form! I gave the guy a gold star sticker, and when I tell you, I had 8 blue collar guys asking me how they got gold stars for their safety helmets, they lined up!!! Everyone needs some love and validation!!

I had a professor who would draw fruit on your papers. Like if you had a good thesis statement he'd draw little grapes "this argument bears fruit." If he really liked it there'd be a watermelon. If you the backed it up with a good paper and a strong conclusion he'd draw a little wine bottle because your fruit was so good it turned into nice wine. I don't know. I liked it though.

I have taco stickers that I use for special assignments that get a perfect score. The way these kids will LOCK IN when they know they might not otherwise get a taco sticker is unbelievable. (They're 15-16 years old)

I taught 8th grade Science for 18 years and always put stickers on any test that got an A. After the first test of the year, no student ever referred to getting an "A" in my class when I passed back tests - they would simply shout out to their friend across the room "I GOT A STICKER!!"

As a bank employee I put a cute stamp on the receipt when people make their mortgage or car payments. Adulting is hard and a stamp makes it better

I was a grown ass adult at WORK and one of our supervisors gave us gold star stickers after a big project…we demanded stickers from then on out. 😂😂😂

it matters because (and I'm sure he covers this in his talk lol) it tells the person that someone saw their effort and took notice of it, it tells them that they matter and someone sees them and their accomplishments

Anytime my students get a 100 on something, I put a smiley face. (The zeros are the eyes and the smile under the zeros) sometimes I forget, but not often. One day a male student asked why I didn’t put a smiley face in his 100!? I fixed his paper and I try to never forget a smiley face. I teach middle school. It does matter!!

I used to verbally announce a gold star winner on my large conference calls. Then I started putting it in the meeting notes. People were disappointed if they did not get a gold star and made efforts to get one. When I left, the team made me a real gold star. I cost nothing but became a fun minute on calls every day 🥰

people like receiving some kind of acknowledgement of their hard work, even if it's only a sticker or a note that says good job

It matters in management too. Recognition is free and should definitely be used - just not in place of compensation.

In my college classes we would get excited when a professor wrote "good job" or something but "good job" with a smiley face was the best feeling ever, like gold star feeling

I keep trying to get my boss to understand this concept. like look i dont need an attaboy everytime i show up but when I come in on my day off because you needed help and the next time i see you all I hear is about 1 mistake I made and not so much as a tha k yku for helping out, ya guess whos not pulling yo ass out the fire next time.
