I wonder if you are able to work with someone to get custom ear molds made to do even more sound dampening than the standard squishy earplugs? If you’ve got an audiologist or anyone you’re working with, it feels worth running this idea by them? Good luck, I’m rooting for you! 💕

Hi! Could you share your experience with everyone when it happens? I think it could be really helpful. I support your decision too, I understand that there are risks involved, but sometimes you just have to let go of the guilt around everything. Personally, my hyperacusis was at a level where I was able to go to parties wearing earplugs for years and then one day it suddenly got worse out of nowhere, without any loud noise or anything triggering it. I suspect it might be related to TMJ or cervical spine issues. I know how frustrating it can be (and I’m still trying to improve mine) but the experience has taught me to simply let go of the guilt. Of course I’ll continue to protect my ears but sometimes you do the best you can and things just happen. In my case, I’ve been able to get MRIs because I tolerate low-frequency sounds much better but I think that even if I couldn’t, I would probably feel the same way you do. In case it helps at all, even though the potential damage may be similar, I know that some places can sedate you for the procedure, although you might want to make sure they put your hearing protection on properly. Anyway, I wish you all the best!! 🤗

Forgive me if this is stupid… but can you get your hearing “removed” as a last resort? Like would being deaf solve this problem?

I will never fully understand your pain and it kills me that I can't reach through the screen and take it all away, but as someone who started 2026 crying to her bf that she would never get to live a normal life, I hope I can at least make you understand that sharing your journey and the incredibly tough decisions you still make is so inspiring. As someone who wanted to give up, I find so much strenght in knowing we are fighting together, even if our monsters are different. Even tough there will never be enough words to describe how much it sucks, I hope you never stop making hard decisions for yourself because that gorgeous smile and the light in your eyes are so worth it 💛

Hi, I had an MRI about seven months after my hyperacusis started. It was a head MRI to rule out any organic cause for my ear pain. I knew so little about the subject that I thought the noise was intentional, to trigger some kind of visible reaction in my brain or auditory nerves 😅 My pain got worse for a little over a week, but I didn’t have a major setback. Good luck!

Honestly if you can walk fine on a day to day basis, it’s not worth the risk❤️

I noticed the quietest MRI I’ve gotten was in a room that had and entire wall stacked with boxes! I think it helps absorb the sound that echos around the room. So maybe asking about what else is in the room could help a little? Wishing you luck 💕

I know nothing about this but is sedation an option that would help?

You know after your first trauma you were able to get sound tolerance back and I’m sure an mri is not going to cause trauma compared to the gun place idk if that makes you feel any better but that’s how I would think about it

I had an head MRI test, I had to double up with earbuds and then Headphones. It was still loud but bearable, no set back.

Are the noise reducing headphones provided the only ones you can use? And if you haven't already thought of this, look into earplugs you could wear underneath the headphones for some extra sound reduction maybe? I use loops earplugs and noise cancelling headphones together a lot. I hope you can get through this without too much reduction in your progress!!

1.5 years ago I had the same issue with my hip. 1 day after the surgery I was pain free, and now after a lot of physical therapy I'm able to walk again. I'm so sorry for the hyperacusis, hope you can find a solution soon 🙏❤️
