Short version: it's an offshoot of the "Prosperity Gospel" - "Good things happen for God's favorites, bad things happen to the wicked." They are *so* indoctrinated that they can't envision a future where "God" would "punish them".

also like…. it’s VERY common for disability access to help able bodied people. ramps made strollers and carts easier to use, elevators made it easier to transport things up and down stories, making wheelchair accessible spots on public transit also helped with stroller access. fhe opposite happens too. prayer rooms became helpful quite rooms for somebody who may be autistic and need quiet time in public spaces, headphones being widespread helped people who use them as a sensory aid feel normal, online shopping helped disabled people access necessities when they cant leave their homes, same thing aplies to telehealth (it’s hard to find examples off the top of my head) there is ZERO reason to not want disabled people to have the same access as you because it DOES help you RIGHT NOW you just hate peoples different than you (you as in general hatefilled reader)💔

Yup! Disability and ableism also impact quite literally every cause. Many of the stereotypes and talking points of other oppressive systems can be peeled back to reveal ableism.

Tbh I think sooo many people think of it as a personal failure to be disabled (young or elderly) and they are soooo sure they will be the exception to aging (or accidents, illness) Like I don't understand people that are against accessibility. "ramps and elevators cant be everywhere" They can???? you just have to value the people that need them or would even just benefit from them... (disabled, elderly, parents with children in prams, children with scooters or bikes, people with luggage. No able-bodied person alive has avoided using every ramp, elevator or curb cut, actually most have sought them out when in certain situations. Even if accessibility was just a "perk", you can manage without, why not have more of them? Like I'm sooooo fed up with people's brains protecting them from future reality so much they harm others on their road of denial... I'm tired

And it can come from inside the house too. Some people dont want to grapple with the fact that their lives could be affected the same way as the people they swear they want to protect, or that their children could be disabled in one way or another and "unable to contribute to society" the same way as them. As long as your able to bootstrap yourself, certain people dont care, and want to make sure the recourses are only there for people who "really need them"

my mother was a special needs teacher back before kids with autism or fragile X ended up being integrated whenever possible. I got my first diagnosis nearly 14 years ago and she still won't discuss it with me. if I talk about medication to someone else and she can hear it, it upsets her. I once got asked to do a news segment about recovery from gambling addiction and she told me not to do it because it would embarrass her. person who loves me most in the world has no interest or care in my recovery

capitalism has done its job well. even countries that have better social programs and are less individualistic than the US they still have this problem. if you're not an active member of society then you don't deserve help. which is ridiculous since a significant number of disabled people could work if there were better accommodations and they had better access. the wealthy elite convinced us that we're worthless if we can't contribute to society. they even recruited church leaders to help push the propaganda. it's disgusting.

Some of it's an extension of the "overdiagnosis" argument. They assume the bigger push for accessibility is coming from younger people who are disabled and "surely those people can't *really* be disabled, they're too young, or that condition didn't exist when i was their age, or my family kember has that diagnosis and they're fine, the doctors just hand these fancy new diagnosis out like candy, everyone thinks they're disabled now", and so on, and so on.

Even before I became disabled, I used so many “accessibility tools.” Larger stalls helped my claustrophobia, crutches and wheelchair-accessibility after my hip surgery, etc. It’s literally just common sense idk why it’s so hard for ppl to understand

I think they think its a moral failing to become disables, like someone can only be disabled if they're not doing everything right or just not trying enough. Maybe it stems from fear of the possibility of it happening with them or their loved ones so they choose to believe that its a choice so they feel more in control.
