@npr: Immigration authorities arrested the father of a man serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln.   DHS confirmed that Border Patrol agents arrested Luis Aviles during a vehicle stop in Key West, Fla., over the weekend. Aviles is from Nicaragua. In a Facebook post, Aviles’ son, Joshua Aviles, who has been on the USS Abraham Lincoln for more than 9 months, wrote, “This is heartbreaking for me. I don't know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly treated like a criminal.”   The military’s “parole-in-place” policy allows parents, spouses and children of service members to obtain legal immigration status. DHS said in a statement that Luis Aviles entered the U.S. illegally, and “Having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation’s laws.”   The arrest comes as the ship set a record for uninterrupted time at sea and amid reports of deteriorating conditions and declining mental health among those aboard.
