@itsbrittanyblackwell: For a long time, “teacher” took up a whole lot of space in how I saw myself. And I’m proud of that part of me. But I’m also a mom. A wife. A daughter. A friend. A woman with things I want to do, places I want to go, people I want to spend time with, and a life that has absolutely nothing to do with school. Those parts of me don’t become less important because I chose a career that asks a lot from me. I think sometimes teachers are made to feel like caring about our students means teaching should come first. But I don’t think our entire identity should be wrapped up in how good we are at our job. You deserve to be a person with a life when the classroom door closes. You deserve hobbies and ridiculous family stories and trips and slow mornings and things on your calendar that have nothing to do with professional development. Teaching is something we do. It’s something we care deeply about. But it was never supposed to be everything we are. And maybe one of the most important things we can do as teachers is build a life that reminds us of that. ❤️
