@developingdfw: Prosper could be the next North Texas community facing a major decision over a data center. A project called Project Tomahawk is being proposed on roughly 39 acres near FM 1385 and Parvin Road. Plans call for a single data center building, along with landscaped buffers, preservation of mature trees, and a public 10-foot hike-and-bike trail. But the developer is also trying to address two of the biggest concerns surrounding data centers before the debate gets started. The proposal includes a closed-loop cooling system designed to minimize ongoing water use and a voluntary maximum noise level of 65 decibels at the property boundary. Project information also estimates more than 500 construction jobs at peak, approximately $69 million in construction wages, and developer-funded improvements to the nearby Brazos Electric substation. But this is far from a done deal. The proposal still has to work through Prosper’s development-review process, and data centers have quickly become one of the most controversial land-use issues in DFW. Residents across North Texas are asking tougher questions about electricity demand, water usage, noise, infrastructure, and how close these facilities should be allowed to neighborhoods.
