When I had my 3rd child I was frazzled. I had a 4 year old, a 2 1/2 year old, and a newborn. I was also struggling with postpartum depression. One day I got my older two in the car and went to the bank. Once there I went to get the children out and realized one was missing. I had left my newborn at home. I was PANICKED! I called my neighbor and she ran over and found him sound asleep in his car seat. She sat with him as I raced home. It would have been my first outing with all 3 kids as my son had only been home for a week. i was just overtired, struggling, and my brain forgot there were now THREE kids and not just two. I can see how this happens. Luckily for me, I left the baby in an air conditioned house not a hot car and it was only 20 minutes and not hours. However, having done something similar to these parents, I understand and I sympathize.

I can’t stand the people in comment sections about hot car deaths. The people who think their brains would never fail them are SO beyond ignorant. If I have a baby I will get all kinds of devices to make sure this doesn’t happen *BECAUSE* I know it could.

My Volvo automatically has an alert to check the backseat when the car is turned off after one of those doors was opened, such an underrated feature

I worked at a parenting magazine for years. It’s purely not intentional and can just happen to anyone! They say to take one shoe off and leave in the backseat so when you get out of the car you’re like “wait, where’s my other shoe?”

My husband’s truck prompts you to check the back seat when you turn off the engine. My car shows a display of passengers in the car when seatbelts are fastened. I think car manufacturers are helping with their technology for this very reason.

my hot take is that the parents who say this "could NEVER happen to them" are bad parents and their hubris could get their kid killed. these situations are almost always due to a break in an established routine and our brains are WIRED to zone out during routines. I've autopilot driven to daycare to pick my kids up out of habit on days I knew they didn't go. it could happen just as easily the other way around to ANYONE.

I don’t think the criminal justice system could impose any punishment worse than the death of their child and the guilt surrounding it. I have never seen a reason to criminalize what is almost always a terrible accident.

one time I drove to work with my 2 year old in the backseat. I usually drop him off at daycare but instead headed straight to work. my son when I was getting out said mommies work. I was like fuck I forgot about you. and thought how bad that could've been. 🥺

I forgot to buckle my son into his car seat once, he was about 2.5 years old and started saying ‘Daddy stop’ and I was like, no man, we’re going home, and then he said ‘I’m unbuckled!’ And I had my blood run cold and realized how these things could happen. And we were still in a parking lot!

My mom forgot me in a car, when she noticed she sprinted to the car, found me in there fine, and then she fell to her knees and broke down. Accidents happen and she already felt so guilty just forgetting me for a few minutes.

The comments sections are always so harsh on these. I just know if my brain ever failed me and my kids in that way, which I know I’m not immune from, no legal consequence could come close to my own guilt and shame.

It’s the thought that ”it’ll never happen to me” is what actually makes it more likely. People were making fun of the inventions coming out to remind adults of their children in the backseat. They forget we are all over worked and tired. Our brains go on autopilot more often than we realize.

When I was a new mom I got the advice to always put my purse in the backseat where the car seats were to prevent mistakingly leaving my baby in the car. They are grown now but I still have the habit of putting my purse in the backseat.

I read the article when it came out and then again recently. Not only does it explain the reality of the problem, it's literally the greatest newspaper article I've ever read in my life, by far. When a hot car tragedy happens and there's a hundred smug idiots screaming how it could never happen to them I want to scream back, "Just read this fcking article!!!"

Had a friend whose 2yo daughter was left in the car and died. She usually brought the baby to work with her, but her in-laws were in town, so her husband took her and their two sons after going out to breakfast. The boys were 5 & 7. They had to crawl over their sleeping sister to get out of their dad’s coupe. Again, because mom usually had the baby, dad and both grandparents didn’t think about her until hours later. It was too late. Not only did dad and grandparents have insane guilt, so did the boys. Even after almost two decades of therapy, they both feel it was their fault. Horrific. Mom worked with Kids in Cars to get the notifications/reminders put in newer cars to check the back seat. Still happening. So sad.
