I listened to this twice. I am struggling with the statement that greedy corporations aren’t villains. The changes in policy stem from greedy corporations in the pockets of the policy makers. This in turn gives us two villains working together. They are not excused. I hear you however there is no way any of us should minimize the greedy corporations.

Washington lobbyists did this enabled by SCOTUS. It’s a great time to brush up on Roman history.

As an 18 yr old in the mid 80's I saw the danger of Reagan and how he was slowing chipping away the middle class. interestingly enough I graduated with an economics degree in 89. As the years progressed it became clear the income gap kept widening up until today. And if Reagan was alive today he would be pleased how his policies have benefited the wealthy and piped us the regular folk.

It started in the 80’s when Trickle-Down Economics, didn’t! Companies bought back their own stock with their tax breaks - they didn’t reinvest and create jobs as was touted by the Regan administration.

History will prove the 1990’s were the peak of America.!! Y2K and 9-11 changed the country forever. Just 6-7 years later the 2008 financial crisis crushed families and bankrupt the country. A reset for me that changed my life forever. Covid destroyed anything left.

Companies stopped investing in their workers pay raises, health insurance, ect. Got rid of pensions, and returned profits to shareholders and not workers. I am a capitalist, but for my children they don’t buy it since it is so hard to buy anything like a car, house, ect. We bought a house in the 90’s I agree it’s a system on stilts that will collapse

Why is no one upset about giving corporations the same rights as citizens over 40 years ago? Isn't that what started the disparity?

Covid changed everything. Houses across the country went up 75%-125%, cars, skyrocketed, and interest rates doubled. Prior to Covid you could still live a good middle class life.

Stock prices became the measure of wealth. Corporations care less about their employees and only about their stock price. The destruction of pensions and creation of the 401k world blew up financial institutions which continue to rage havoc with workers pay

a key fact that he did not touch on as a person close to his age coming out of college in the early '90s with even $20,000 to loan debt was considered high. Kids come out of college now have debt three four times if not higher than what we did back in the early 90s so when trying to buy a home that depth comes into play for what they can afford in a mortgage.

28. No debt but absolutely no assets either. No plans of having kids. Probably won't even *try* to buy a house in this lifetime. Consider moving abroad more than I ever thought I would.

The life you described in 1993 was not middle class. Give me a break. You made more then than many college graduates do now. I’m not saying I completely disagree with your assessment, but as a Gen X’er who was actually middle class- raising three children in a 1000 sq ft house on $50,000 a year with no pool and NOT going out to eat- I feel like you’re out of touch with reality.
