@thelocalyear: Is a freeze dryer worth it? Do you actually use them a lot? Let me know! #freezedryer #homesteading #thelocalyear #FoodPreservation #canning
We bought ours for our garden. If you are already canning and dehydrating and you have the funds.. a freeze dryer is 100% worth it. Especially because even if your garden gets overwhelming you can freeze it all and freeze dry it later 😂

I love ours. I grow most of our own foods and find the freeze dryer is great for healthy snacks and preserving fruit while it is fresh. It concentrates the flavors and the kids always love snacks made in the freeze dryer. Green beans make an excellent crispy snack when you boil them, season them, and then freeze dry them.

I have one- I currently have 300 freeze dried eggs which should get us through winter when our girls are barely laying. I did 40lb of diced onion which is very slick for cooking with. I freeze dry all my herbs as the flavor is so much better- pretty much tastes like fresh herbs. I buy fruits in bulk when in season and then use them all year long.

Best decision I ever made was to buy my freeze dryer! I just shredded some giant zucchini (the ones that hide) prepped them and got them in the freeze dryer. Now they will be ready for when I make zucchini bread, soup, or even to toss in my smoothies. You will really second guess yourself as to why you have a dehydrator (I don’t anymore)

I have one and it’s my favorite preservation tool. I’ve basically stopped dehydrating and barely can anymore. Mostly just freeze drying now

We have one. The possibilities are (almost) endless. We have done so many runs of pretty much anything. When Milk was $2.34 a gallon we did 40 gallons and have not bought Milk for almost a year. Eggs too. You will not regret it. From leftovers to veggies to fruit to cream cheese we have freeze dried it. Storage is simple too!

Freeze dryers are amazing currently I’m freeze drying all kinds of vegetables from my garden and some meat so I can make some dried soups for the winter to rehydrate. I also just made some instant mashed potatoes. They turned out great.

It’s very good for fruit. I tend to prefer it for things eaten in the freeze dry form rather than rehydrating it. However it’s not bad for things like diced carrots you would put in a soup etc. I like mine and wasn’t sure if I would use it a lot but I do.

I bought mine in 2019 for preserving my garden harvest. Best purchase I’ve ever made. It’s allowed us to preserve foods in different ways and has given our kids new healthy snack options of Whole Foods without the junk.

Yes I've had one for the last three years and it's totally worth it! It gives you another option for doing a lot of things in different ways that you can't do with a dehydrator, canning, etc. Also if you're not a huge Tomato canning person, but like to have certain tomato things on hand, we grow a lot of tomatoes and freeze dry them into a powder that lets us then turn it into a paste, or sauce, or whatever other tomato products you need. it stores way longer than any canned tomatoes, it's a lot less work and lasts up to 25 years if needed. Highly recommend one. We have a Harvest right medium size for our family if 3 and it works great.

Best money I ever spent. Milk that will expire. Freeze dry it. Left overs, freeze dry it. It’s nice to have that option.

Have you thought of a dehydrator? Must less expensive
Freeze dryers are the best way to retain taste and nutrients

Yes, I would recommend one. We’ve had ours a short while but we love it. We are still experimenting & I t’s easy to use. Freezing items in a freezer is great but your space limited and the lifespan of frozen items is short. Canning items is great but again shelf space is limited and the shelf life is limited. Freeze drying only requires water or broth to reconstitute and it keeps 98% of its nutritional value. There are some TT that have great recipes & ideas.

I got mine to preserve my garden harvest as well as canning. So far it’s been great for zucchini, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Just got it a couple weeks ago, but so far no regrets

Have one love it and use it 24/7 from leftovers to back packing meals, I refuse to can broth it is only freeze dried now, zero waste as my tomato liquid and skins are now being made msg powder and tomato powder, all fruit is officially eaten like candy. The uses are endless and I have been going with it for 4 years now and summer heat waves is the only time it isn’t running oh yes all the chicken 🥰🥰🥰🥰

It’s an investment, but you can do SO much with it! Freeze dried food tastes better than dehydrated, lasts longer, and keeps more of the nutrients.
