@monicaumunna: For so long, I thought I was asking for something simple… “I just want you to acknowledge my feelings.” Then I realized I wasn’t just asking my husband to acknowledge my feelings, I was asking him to acknowledge them in a way that showed me he agreed with me, that he was taking my side, that he understood the situation the way I understood it, that he was wrong (even when he wasn’t), and that he would change his stance, his answer, or the plan because of how I felt. And when he didn’t do those things, I felt like he wasn’t hearing me, but that wasn’t really the problem… The problem was that I had confused being acknowledged with being agreed with. I wasn’t asking for acknowledgement, I was demanding to be obeyed. Do it my way…see it my way, or else I’m not being acknowledged. My husband can understand why I feel the way I feel without agreeing with my interpretation of the situation. He can care that I’m hurt without believing that he’s wrong… He can hear me and still hold his position!!! Sometimes it’s important to ask, are we really asking for acknowledgement or are we actually demanding to be obeyed, even if that is not our intention?🫡🙏🏼🫶🏼

she viewed the harmony of agreement as a signal that our relationship was good. so when I deigned to express an opinion that was different from hers then it meant that our relationship was bad.

this sounds like it was written by ai bc theres such low nuance. acknowledging your feelings and taking them into consideration would very likely require SOME kind of change/compromise to a plan. that's not full agreement. but it demonstrates compassion among other things. on both sides btw.

That last line “are you just demanding to be obeyed” says it all. Thats the goal of hurt feelings. And by the way, I don’t believe person A can hurt person B’s feelings. Person B is hurt because of their expectations not being met

Dear god scream it louder. All of that. Validation and acknowledgment have NOTHING to do with agreement, acquiescence, or apology.

10000x yes. Ppl don’t understand what validation actually is. I myself didn’t understand for a long time. Acknowledgement and agreement are totally separate entities. “I hear you”, “I know this is important to you”, “I can see that you’re upset about this” is acknowledgement. BUT IT IS NOT AGREEMENT.

Feelings are always real, but they're not always right. Sometimes a person's feelings are not rooted in anything but their own insecurities and their projected interpretation of events.

Thank You. Men shouldn’t have to change the way that they feel about a situation to make you happy… or not get punished for having a difference of opinion of what the facts actually are, a different life experience, or understanding of the situational appropriate action to take- it’s manipulation
