Officer Frank Mancini tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds 46 years after an incident where he and two fellow officers attempted to apprehend robbery suspects. On April 10, 1965, Officer Mancini and Officer Eugene Hooper were inspecting a vehicle on East Avenue past Silvercrest Avenue. During this, one of the subjects managed to seize control of a weapon, shooting Officer Hooper, Officer Frank Mancini, and Reserve Officer Wintrow. A passing truck driver discovered the scene and used the police radio to call for assistance. Both suspects, both 25 years old, were apprehended at their apartment four hours later. The shooter, a parolee, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder, receiving two life sentences. He was denied parole in 2010 and 2014, eventually passing away in prison on October 18, 2017. His accomplice, also on parole, was convicted of second-degree murder and paroled in 1977. Officer Mancini, who was paralyzed from the chest down, passed away from his wounds on January 23, 2012. A United States Coast Guard veteran, Officer Mancini had served with the Akron Police Department for only one year at the time of the shooting. He is survived by his sisters.
