@ethanparkerlife: Linen sheets. Magnesium spray. The expensive mattress topper. All three arrive with the same sentence attached, and the sentence is that it completely transformed my sleep. Maybe it did. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that sleep is one of the very few things in your house that already comes with numbers on it. Your phone knows roughly when you went down. You know how many times you woke up in the night. You know whether the alarm was a surprise or whether you had been lying there for twenty minutes waiting for it. So the claim is checkable, and almost nobody checks it. Two weeks on the old sheets, then two weeks on the new ones. Same room temperature, same bedtime give or take twenty minutes, nothing else changed on purpose. Every morning you write three things down: how long it took to fall asleep, how many times you woke up, and one word for how you feel. Twenty-eight lines in a note on your phone. That is the entire experiment. Now the part people skip, which is that you have to be willing to lose. If the two weeks come out looking the same, then these are simply sheets you like, and liking them is a perfectly good reason to own them. The problem was never the linen. It was the word transformed sitting there with nothing behind it. Worth saying what this is not. It is not a claim that linen does nothing. Fabric and temperature are genuinely connected, and if you sleep hot then what is underneath you matters more than it does for other people. That is a reason to measure it rather than a reason to skip measuring it. Those same fourteen days work on everything else in that room. Blackout curtains. Magnesium. The sleep app with the subscription. Each one is a fourteen-day question, and after four of them you know which two were doing the work and which two were decoration that you paid for. ... Run the two weeks before you buy the second set. Either you come out of it with a number or you come out of it with your money, and both of those beat a feeling.
