Anxiety needs a moving target, so I’ve been taking morning and evening walks alone. And to be honest, I don’t even have words for the last few months. One minute the water barely touches my feet. The next, a wave hits hard enough to knock me off balance. Same sea. Different moment. My life feels like a daily dichotomy right now. USA vs. Viet Nam Truth vs. lie Comfort vs hurt What I believed vs. what I now know I have been a black-and-white thinker for most of my life. Things are good or bad. Right or wrong. You love me or you don’t. I’m unlearning some of that. Because two things can be true. You can love someone and be deeply angry with them. You can forgive and still not trust. You can want something to work and still question whether it will. But ….. You can be grateful for your life and still grieve parts of it. One truth doesn’t erase the other. This morning, my walk seemed to put all of this right in front of me. I walked on the ocean beach and through the rice fields as the sun came up. Land and sea. I’m learning there is a place where land and sea meet. Neither stops being what it is. Both exist at the same time. Maybe that’s where I am right now. I’m trying to decipher what belongs together and what doesn’t. What I accept and what I don’t. What is uncomfortable because I’m hurt and what is unacceptable because it crosses a boundary. What needs time and what needs action. What is love and what love does not excuse. And somewhere in all of that, I’m trying to figure out what is true for me.
