@crmnallyobsessed: Is postpartum psychosis a recognized mental illness on its own? That diagnosis is at the crux of Lindsay Clancy's defense against criminal responsibility in the deaths of her children, but there's a problem with that, according to a pediatric psychiatrist testifying for the prosecution. Dr. Avram Mack previously testified on Friday that Clancy was criminally responsible for her children's deaths and — although severely clinically depressed — wasn't psychotic when she killed them. On cross-examination Monday, Mack clashed with Clancy's defense lawyer, Kevin Reddington, over how depression, postpartum depression, psychosis and postpartum psychosis are defined and diagnosed. Mack said the American Psychiatric Association does not recognize postpartum psychosis as its own standalone diagnosis in its diagnostic manual. He testified that while a separate diagnosis has been proposed, he does not believe its symptoms have been clearly enough defined to establish reliable diagnostic criteria. Mack further testified that Clancy's alleged symptoms of intrusive, harmful thoughts didn't align with what he described as generally accepted timelines for postpartum mental illness. Reddington pushed back, accusing Mack of cherry-picking definitions and attempting to minimize the seriousness of Clancy's reported symptoms and treatment. #LindsayClancy #PostPartumMentalHealth #Psychiatry

Psychologist here, basically he is saying that “Pospartum psychocis” is not an offical diagonsis. There is the diagnosis of pospartum but not one with psychocis in it. The symptom can be called psychocis but pospartum psychocis is not something much heard of.

Postpartum psychosis is a rare symptom OF postpartum depression, it is not a diagnosis in itself or a standalone disordee. The lawyer is confused.

Post-partum psychosis is not diagnosis according to the DSM-5. Hence why the psychiatrist keeps asking him if he’s referring to the non-recognized illness (which would not be in his expertise) or the phenomenon.

That “lawyer” doesn’t even know that PPD isn’t even a recognized illness but bases defense on it. Yeah, that’s American court.

Yes, postpartum psychosis is universally recognized by physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists as a real, severe, and treatable medical illness. Medical professionals view it as a critical psychiatric emergency that requires immediate medical intervention, usually involving hospitalization.
